The Benefits Of Thai Massage

Thai massage has many benefits for the individual. It uses gentle pressure on energy lines and yoga-like stretching to relax the whole body on a deeper level. This deeper level of relaxation improves the individuals’ personal outlook and their emotional status. Deep relaxation has been shown to promote a deeper, more restorative night’s sleep as well. This deeper sleep allows the body to heal itself physically, and lets you feel more refreshed upon awakening.

Thai massage helps to reduce the individual’s stress levels and improve their overall circulation. This is accomplished by the gradual movement of the person through different yoga-like positions. This will enhance the person’s flexibility allowing for a greater range of motion. This greater range of motion and flexibility reduces muscle stress and strain and helps to prevent trip and fall accidents.

The slow movements allow for the mind and the spirit to slow down and realize a true form of relaxation. It centres on the individual. In doing this stressors will not affect the person as much. This will aid to level out blood pressure. These stressors, in later life, cause heart problems. By centring oneself, and lowering the reaction to stressors, one will lower the occurrence of heart problems.

Thai massage allows the person to attain a true level of relaxation. The stress will be depleted from their muscles. This will facilitate a more fluid range of extension by the muscles. This will help to increase your energy levels. With healthier muscles and increased energy, the person will be able to maintain healthy weights. This will lower blood sugar levels, and reverse the onset of type 2 diabetes, and help with the maintenance of type one diabetes.

Thai massage also enhances the circulatory system. It increases circulation in the body. With increased circulation, more oxygen will be brought to the brain. This will lower the number of migraines and headaches the individual suffers from. Increased circulation will lower the chances of blood clotting in the arteries. Thai massage will rejuvenate and refresh you. It will help you think clearer because you will feel better after it.

What are energy lines?

  • The invisible energy lines can not be verified anatomically and are perceived to circulate throughout the body to maintain health and vitality.
  • There are said to be 72,000 lines. Thais believe 10 main lines “Sen Pra Tan Sib”  Principle neurological pathways (Communication pathways) that are sufficient to treat the whole body and its internal organs.
  • This is a non-religious or spiritual perspective and practice.
  • When this energy flow is blocked or restricted, it creates sickness or disease. To clear these blockages, Thai massage combines the application of pressure with manipulation, adjustment and muscle stretching in a full-body works, which improves overall health and well-being.

Traditional Thai Hermit Exercise

Thai Yogi Exercise or Ruesri Dat Ton is a traditional Hermit exercise developed in Thailand about 2500 years ago. In ancient times, Hermits (monks) lived and trained themselves in the mountain for their Buddhist practice. From doing meditation for a long time, their muscles and ligaments became tight and sore, so that they had to stretch and release pain in order to stay healthy throughout their trainings. That was considered the origin of Ruesri (hermit) Dat (stretch) Ton(self) . Although it was influenced by Ayurveda and Yoga originating in India, Ruesri Dat Ton’s breathing method and pauses are quite unique compared to any other exercise method.

Ruesri Dat Ton is also considered a healing yoga. It builds muscle tone and toned muscles have less chance of injury. It also helps to regulate weight by helping to maintain a balanced metabolism. Additionally, Thai Yoga stretch muscles lengthwise, causing fat to be eliminated around the cells, thus reducing cellulite.

There are about 127 Ruesri Dat Ton poses that are officially approved by Thai Health Agency. These 15 out of 127 illustrated contorted postures are actually specific asana’s or ‘seats’ of self-exercise and besides offering relief from the common cross-legged sitting position, these postures also promise medical benefits.

What are the main differences between Traditional Thai Massage and Swedish Massage?

I have been asked many times about the difference between Swedish massage and Thai massage since I started my own massage service in Alberta, Canada. This article will give you a simple comparison and make it quite clear for those who have asked this question.

Swedish massage and Thai massage are very different both in their techniques and in their philosophies. Swedish massage is a Western modality and Thai massage is Eastern and originally comes from India and its an ancient healing modality. It is thought to have been developed by Buddhist monks in Thailand 2,500 years ago.

Swedish massage is well known as the classical or relaxing massage as it uses five main techniques; stroking and gliding, kneading, rubbing, pounding and shaking. These techniques are based on Western anatomy and physiology and their aim is to achieve relaxing and healing effects.

Thai massage is often described as “lazy yoga.” It uses quite similar techniques as Swedish massage, but Thai massage also stimulates the acupressure points in relation to the concept of energy lines in order to provide relief, to stretch and loosen tightened muscles, to release tension and relieve joints. Thai massage leaves you feeling relaxed and energized. In addition, Thai massage uses the technique of blocking and releasing the blood flow by applying sustained pressure for around 30 seconds to the areas where legs and arms meet the torso. This is a real circulation booster. When the pressure is released, you suddenly feel a rush of heat as blood floods back along your limbs.

Swedish massage uses essential oils or lotions to suit the client’s skin type. The client is undressed and may cover themselves with towels; thus the massage space must be private. For a Swedish massage, the client lies on a massage table (usually padded for extra comfort). In contrast, there is no need for oil to be used in Thai massage, so the client can remain fully clothed and privacy is not usually required. Generally, a Thai massage is done on a floor mat.

With regard to positions, a Swedish massage requires the client to lie on his/her back and stomach most of the time but does not require much physical flexibility. A Thai massage, on the other hand, requires the client to lie on his/her back, stomach and side, as well as to sit. It can also be more physically demanding and requires more flexibility.

At Thai Massage & Wellness

Thai traditional medicine is one of the most valuable knowledge handed down from Thai ancestors.
In spite of the increasing popularity of Western modern medicine,
Thai traditional medicine is still widely used in taking care of health in daily life, especially among the rural Thais. For the past decade, the government and private organizations have worked in collaboration to restore the values and popularity of Thai traditional medicine.
Recently, the Ministry of Public Health has promoted the use of herbal medicine,
and the Center for Herbal Information has collected data and performed scientific studies on this matter. Thai Massage Restoration Project has also revised the text on Thai traditional massage, which is now widely practised.
The future prospects of Thai traditional medicine and Thai massage are rather positive because the Foundation for Restoring Thai Traditional Medicine and the College of Ayurvedic Medicine has the program and curriculum to produce personnel on traditional medicine. They have also attempted to integrate the basic knowledge of Western medicine into the study and practice of Thai traditional medicine.
